Religion or Spirituality?

Religion can be defined as a system of human norms and values that is founded on belief in a superhuman order.Today religion is considered source of discrimination, disagreement and disunion. Yet, in fact ,religion has been the third greater unifier of humankind, alongside money and empire. The crucial historical role of religion has been to give superhuman legitimacy to these fragile structures.

The fundamental basis of religion are-First, it must espouse a universal superhuman order that is true always and everywhere. Second, it must insist on spreading this belief to everyone. In other words, it must be universal and missionary.

The best-known religions of history, such as Islam and Buddhism, are universal and missionary. As far as we know, universal and missionary religions began to appear only in the first millennium BC. Their emergence was one of the most important revolutions in history, and made a vital contribution to the unification of humankind, much like the emergence of universal empires and money. The first monotheist religion known to us appeared in Egypt, C.350 BC, Pharaoh Akhenaten, the god Aten, was, in fact, the supreme power ruling the universe.Polytheism gave birth not merely to monotheist religions, but also to dualistic ones. Dualistic religions espouse the existence of two opposing powers: good and evil.

On the contrary, spirituality is something which is the inner work you do which includes body, mind and soul.

While growing up,I always remember accompanying my grandmother to temple to offer prayers, only one God existed in my world.

As I grew older and was educated about other religions I realised how biased I and my family is towards one religion. They would only pray to one and sometimes disrespect(if you don’t pray other but at least don’t disrespect other ones) another especially Islam but luckily,I was blessed enough to realise and understand the values and teachings of all religions around me I might not follow all but there is great amount of respect in my heart for each one of them. I always make sure to shut up another person who tries to talk ill of about another religion and talk good about their own.

Now, my whole perception about religion has changed already. Especially, after reading THE SECRET TO TEEN POWER by Paul Harrington.I never knew what spirituality meant until I came across this book which is based on the law of attraction. The book mainly talks about ask, believe and receive. How the universe and each and every particle is working towards what you want and how you can change things in your life just by changing the way you think..I always questioned the presence of god because we can’t see him but this book is so logical and everything is explained so beautifully. It literally changed my perspective and gave me food for thought.

I spent my childhood listening to the tales of Ramayana, Mahabharta an Bhagvad Gita and I was fascinated and inspired after listening to them but somewhere in the corner of my heart I always felt that how can these things happen now. It was my curiosity as a child which didn’t believe everything in these tales.

My family obsesses over one religion and there is nothing bad in that but I had my own questions and beliefs which didn’t totally align with theirs and that’s where I am most different in my family. I read in Robin Sharma’s novel that don’t live the life your mother or father lived…. be courageous to have your own beliefs and values.I want to experience and explore myself rather blindly following my parents spiritual journeys. I respect their journies and learn from them but I want to make that choice if I want it to be mine too.

I believe that part of the reason I run away from my religion is because I feel there is a certain kind of pressure for me to do or practice some rituals. However, I feel that spirituality is something you believe in and feel naturally come to you by instances and experiences.

At end of the day, all religions convey the same message it’s just that everyone has their own medium of conveying it either by practice or stories. I have always stood by the idea that god is in our hearts so help and be compassionate to people and try not to hurt them, for me that is the greatest kind of worship. Be there for someone in the times of need and spending time in service of others. After all, we walk each other home…..

Although I do see some differences, atleast in terms of how WE define religion and spirituality, I do not think their should be. Religion comes from the terms RE and ligare, which is where we get our term ligament. This religion means a return to REconnection. I think in this sense, religion and spirituality can be viewed as being the same, as both spirituality and religion teach us to reconnect with out source. But man has tampered so much with these that now a days, it is probably best to make a distinction. Great post by the way!

  6. I believe that Jesus is the only way to the Father, God.
I don’t like seeing the message portrayed in hate instead of love though. We can agree on that.
